You can get a so-so GUI (Arena, SCID, ChessDB etc.) and much stronger engines (fire, stockfish, houdini etc) for free online. Fritz 12 is a high quality GUI with a weak engine. They are very much worth the price themselves.
So analysis, openings, endgames etc, can all be analysed via scid though whichever engines you decide on (no reason to only have one). CM GM edition has the best set of tutorials ever created, imo.
